TIPS FOR FIRST OF MAYS
By Robert Noel Clarkson

  1. COSTUME IDEAS:
Buy inexpensive loud colored or mismatched clothing at thrift stores.
You can make you own wigs using an old t-shirt with elastic and yarn or fun fur fabric.
Rugby Shirts are great clown shirts, look for similar banded socks too.
(Baste) Sew bright colored patches on plain colored baggy (too large) pants
Find a good hat to match your charactor! Sew applique or flower on it.
Your first major purchase should be a good pair of handmade clown shoes

  2. SKITS:
Learn a skill, juggling, magic, unicycle, or a good skit
Learn one thing very well first. Then start to learn another!
Do not try to learn everything at once, start small and build.

  3. MAGIC:
My opinion, do bright fun clown tricks, avoid serious card tricks or involved illusions
Good clown tricks are Hippy Hop Rabbits, Clowning Around, all rope tricks (use dyed colored ropes), magic funnel, lollipops, candy store, Forgetful Freddie, most silk magic, and most comedy magic tricks: Prof Cheers Rope, "FAKE" (Temple Screens).

  4. SIGHT GAGS:
Most novelty gags: Swollen thumb, Magic Sound Effect Hammer, Texas Fly Swatter, Whoopie Cushion, and such all make good clown skit material. I have a couple
books with good skits for one or more clowns available.
